Until recently, West Glebe Park in Corby had become neglected, having deteriorated over a number of years. “Through the initial consultation undertaken with local residents, it became apparent that people wanted the park to change from an isolated space that some were afraid to walk through, into a park that they could enjoy,” explains Councillor John McGhee, Corby Borough Council’s Lead Member for Community.
With initial Lottery funding, the project worked in partnership with the community to redevelop the park for sport and recreational use. A Friends of the Park group (FotP) was set up to start the work, and the local council improved the drainage and level of the park’s existing football pitches.
The improved pitches soon attracted more players than the old changing rooms could accommodate and it became apparent that the project needed to expand to meet local demands.
Further funding has been used to build a new pavilion with changing rooms and a community room, a floodlit Astroturf pitch, a multi-sports court, a play area, improved car parking and pathways, a skate park, new lighting, a heritage trail and CCTV systems.
“The park now feels a safe and happy place to be and is extremely popular with all generations, who are able to enjoy the facilities together,” says John. Activities include walking, football, basketball, rounders, kickboxing and aerobics. There are also special sessions for young people after school and during the holidays.
“The number of sessions and the attendance levels have far exceeded the numbers originally anticipated,” John explains, “and the project has been developed into a borough-wide scheme.” Recently the facilities even featured on GMTV, when Mr Motivator joined a local girls’ football team for fitness sessions that were broadcast live.
